Due to his excessive defense of Lewis Hamilton, Kevin Magnussen was given three separate penalties; however, his antics also allowed teammate Nico Hulkenberg to score points.
While acknowledging that he should have received all three of his penalties for illegally defending against Lewis Hamilton, Kevin Magnussen promised to repeat the action in order to support his Haas team.
In his desperation to keep the Briton behind in the Miami Grand Prix Sprint, the Dane cut a chicane, collided with Hamilton’s vehicle, and ran the Briton off the road in separate incidents. Ultimately, he contributed just enough to let teammate Nico Hulkenberg open up a sizable lead.
Magnussen received three penalties, but the German’s outcome gave Haas two points. The 31-year-old added that he had no regrets despite the fact that he did not enjoy what he had to do.
“There is no doubt that all of the penalties were well deserved,” the Haas racer stated to Sky Sports. However, I had to restart the game. There, I was right behind Nico in the lead and, early in the race, I picked up a lot of ground to move up into P8.
“I felt that because I had good pace and DRS from Nico, I was well-protected from Lewis. Nico could have returned DRS to protect me since we could have easily been P7 and P8, but instead he cut the chicane, leaving me extremely exposed to Lewis.
“I got into a furious fight with him, and even though I dislike doing it, I had to make the same kind of space I had in Jeddah. However, in the end, I performed my duties as a team player, and Nico scored his points since I closed the gap for him. He eluded Lewis and [Yuki] Tsunoda’s grasp. Although it’s not my preferred method of racing, I had to do it today.”
Despite Hamilton overtaking him on the last lap, Tsunoda managed to secure eighth place and the final point. After speeding in the pits earlier in the short-form race, the British driver received a drive-through penalty at the conclusion of the event.
He was penalized for 20 seconds as a result, which kept him well out of the scoring range. Even so, he was beaming as he addressed the media following a protracted debrief in the Mercedes garage with team principal Toto Wolff.
Hamilton responded, “I think that’s really honest of him and pretty cool,” when he heard Magnussen’s remarks. I don’t have any; the race was enjoyable. I enjoy racing hard, and even though it felt a little bit on the edge, I loved it. I wasn’t particularly pissed off, sorry, angry, or anything else. That’s how you function as a cohesive unit.”
