Tiger Woods hasn’t competed since pulling out of the Masters in April, but the American has been seen stepping up his comeback in Mexico six months later.
Tiger Woods was spotted this week at the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico even though there are still uncertainties regarding the PGA Tour player’s future.
This week’s event features Woods on site as the PGA Tour visits a course created by the 15-time major champion for the first time. The tournament will be held at El Cardonal at Diamante, which was created by Woods’ TGR design team as their first course in 2014. The 82-time winner of the PGA Tour was spotted driving around the course in a golf cart as competitors began their practice sessions ahead of this week’s competition, which gets underway on Thursday.
The American hasn’t competed since round three of the Masters Tournament in April of this year, when he had to withdraw because of an ankle injury. Woods had surgery to address the problem in the following days, and he has been recuperating ever since.
The injury represented the most recent setback in a lengthy string of issues dating back to his involvement in a car accident in Los Angeles in February 2021. In the collision, Woods’ right leg sustained injuries that could have ended his career and have since prevented him from playing competitively.
Despite the recurring issues, the 2019 Masters champion looked at ease with his right leg, which was comfortably propped over his left, and on the cart as he made his way around the course on Tuesday. The siting is Woods’ latest on a golf course, after recently being spotted at The Hay at Pebble Beach, and the range at Liberty National.
It remains to be seen when the 47-year-old will return to competition, but one hint points towards to as close as next month at the Hero World Challenge. The reduced-field event is hosted by Woods each year in the Bahamas, and a list of those competing was released by the Tour last month.
Only 19 of the 20 players in the field were named, with Woods’ name omitted. The final spot was designated as a “TBA tournament exemption.” It is widely believed that this spot will remain empty for the time being while tournament host Woods, who has been recovering for six months, continues.
The 82-time Tour winner would round out a star-studded field that included Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland, and Scottie Scheffler. Woods was scheduled to compete in the 2022 edition of the competition in December of last year, but he had to pull out a few days before play began because of a foot injury.
