DeChambeau’s Crushers GC won LIV golf team championship, but his statement later clearly delineated.
The 2023 LIV Golf season has ended.
Bryson DeChambeau’s Crusher GC team prevailed to win the team championship in Miami. They won the team event by two shots as the Crushers totaled 11 under, beating second placed RangeGoats.
Anirban Lahiri led the way, shooting a bogey-free 7-under 65 with five birdies and an eagle.
DeChambeau had the second-lowest score at 5-under 67 with eight birdies and three bogeys in the round. His bogey putt on 18 secured the victory and a wild celebration ensued.
After the dust settled, DeChambeau made a bold statement.
“Any time you win with a team, I honestly say that’s more important than the individual things,” DeChambeau said. “Look, the big tournaments are great, but there’s a team behind you there. I have a team, my own team. But having the Crushers at the center of the entire first season just means the world.
“We are part of history, and I couldn’t be more proud of these guys and that certainly takes away the pain of last week.”
Rounding out the winning team’s scoring were Charles Howell III, who tied for par 72, and Paul Casey, who shot a 1-over 73.
DeChambeau picked his team based on experience and it paid off answer because they are the first team to win the entire LIV Golf season.
“I think when you have a team, you want players who are going to be there day in and day out,” he said. “You don’t want players who can be really good one day but not the next and are fickle… I couldn’t have picked a better group of guys to be with.
There are two reasons why DeChambeau loves his team so much.
“First of all, they are wiser than me so I want to gain more knowledge from what they have,” he said. “And second, they are dedicated to drafting and getting better every day, and that’s what you need in the team format and in team competition, and that’s what you need in LIV to win , and we proved it today.”
The Crushers are in the top 4 teams so they have a bye to the semi-finals. Their first match was against Cleeks. DeChambeau won 4 and 3 against compatriot Martin Kaymer, and Casey won 6 and 5 against Richard Bland to give them the two points they needed to progress.
RangeGoats were second at 9 under, with captain Bubba Watson leading them with a 5 under 67. Joaquin Niemann’s 6 under 66 helped his Torque GC team into third place with a total score of 6 under . The top four were rounded out by Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces, who finished in a draw.
Now, most of LIV Golf will begin their five-month holiday season. There will be a promotion tournament in early
December to determine whether the four relegated players will regain their places in the tournament or another player on the field will replace them.
