The seven-time world champion expressed pessimism ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, saying Mercedes would struggle to qualify in Q3.
However, Hamilton disproved his own theory and finished third on the grid, trailing only pole-finishers Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
Hamilton began the race on the soft compound tires despite having an advantageous grid position; this choice ultimately cost him the race.
The British runner quickly changed to hard tires ahead of the pack, but he found it difficult to keep them in good condition while he grumbled about the tactic over the team radio.
