A subtle jab at LIV Golf and first-round leader Bryson DeChambeau was too much for Wyndham Clark to resist.
After shooting a dismal 1-over 73 in his first competitive round at The Masters, Wyndham Clark launched a barbaric attack on LIV Golf League leaders Bryson DeChambeau and his contemporaries.
With a birdie on the ninth hole, 30-year-old Clark moved calmly to 3-under par and onto the first page of the leaderboard.
However, the defending US Open champion spun his third shot into the water on the fifteenth hole, making double bogeys after making a bogey at the eleventh.
Following that, Clark closed with a bogey on the 18th, finishing eight shots behind the current leader, DeChambeau, who shot his lowest-ever round of 65 at Augusta National.
Upon answering several inquiries regarding his round from a group of reporters, Clark came to the conclusion that he was still very much in the competition.
Given DeChambeau’s lead, Clark was compelled to challenge the 54-hole layout at LIV Golf.
Clark said:
Yes, there are 54 holes. They only play 54 in LIV Golf, so I feel like I have a good chance. There’s still a ton of golf left. It’s evident that someone shot 7-under. Tomorrow, I could accomplish that.”
After his opening round at the Masters, Wyndham Clark is optimistic that he can still catch the leaders.
Famously, four years ago, DeChambeau claimed that Augusta National was a “par-67” because he could reach all four of the course’s par-5s in two shots.
After today’s round, the hard-hitting American admitted to reporters that he “messed up” by making that specific comment in 2020.
There are thirteen LIV Golf players competing this week.
Greg Norman, the CEO of LIV Golf, attended despite being “denied” a ticket by the event organizers.
Jon Rahm, the biggest addition to LIV Golf and the defending champion, tied Clark’s round of 73.
