Tiger Woods’s projected schedule for the 2024 season appears to be scrapped in favor of competing in the Masters in April after missing the Valspar Championship.
Tiger Woods’ most recent action has completely disregarded his suggested strategy for the 2024 season.
The fact that the golf icon chose not to participate in the Valspar Championship suggests that the next time Woods hits the links will probably be at the Masters in mid-April. It is increasingly obvious that Woods, 48, will skip all tournaments in March in order to get ready for the Masters unless he makes an unexpected appearance at the Houston Open at the end of the month, something he has never done before.
Woods will be defying his suggested strategy for this season by doing this. After suffering severe injuries to his leg in a car accident in California in 2021, Woods declared in December 2023 that his objective for 2024 was to compete in one tournament per month in order to regain his playing form. At the time, Woods told the Golf Channel, “Once a month seems reasonable.”
It allows me a week to tune up and a few weeks to recuperate. Perhaps I can settle into the beat.” The 15-time major winner registered for and participated in The Genesis Invitational in February, giving the impression that he was headed in the right direction for a while.
But his attempt at a comeback was dashed when he had to withdraw from the competition in the second round due to what he claimed to be the flu. “We now know that my illness was influenza, so I had to withdraw from @thegenesisinv,” he wrote on social media.
“I’m getting better and resting. I hope the players have a successful weekend. I want to thank @GenesisUSA and all the fans for their support, and I’m sorry I couldn’t make it.”
Woods did not participate in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, so he was also not present at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. At first, Woods had intended to attend The Players, but that turned out not to be the case.
“Maybe a monthly competition would be the ideal situation, in my opinion. That seems realistic to me,” he declared in December. “Maybe at Genesis to start, and then something in March close to the Players.
“Once more, this is how we currently have it set up: there is one major event per month. It positions itself to do so. I have to prepare myself for all of that now. This week, in my opinion, is a significant step in that way.”
Many golf fans have wondered about Woods’ future on the tour given his numerous injury concerns. Commissioner of the PGA Tour Jay Monahan provided some insight into the status of the legendary golfer and what else may be in store for Woods this year.
“I believe that everyone is aware of Tiger’s desire to earn a spot in every competition. “That’s his makeup,” Monahan remarked when asked if he would create a unique division in which previous winners could compete. However, I believe that as you move forward and develop as a company, you consider how to appease and cater to a devoted fan base.
More generally, those conversations would probably take place during the policy board meeting. We would undoubtedly have that conversation. He would be the most difficult to persuade, though.
