Tyrrell Hatton has shared his thoughts about joining LIV Golf and how late in the day he made the decision to quit the major tours.
After flipping a coin, Tyrrell Hatton claims he signed his LIV Golf contract with just a minute remaining.
After corresponding for a month, Hatton joined the breakaway for the 2024 campaign in January.
The Englishman, who is currently a member of Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII, reportedly signed a deal with LIV for more than $50 million.
In 2024, he very well might have continued to compete on the PGA and DP World Tours.
His partner in crime Hatton was assessing his options at the airport when he saw Mick Donaghy.
Donaghy was awaiting word on whether or not he would be attending LIV’s curtain-raiser in Mayakoba.
Alternatively, if he was really going to California to loop for Hatton at the PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Hatton’s response is now known, and he discussed his choice to join LIV on the Fairway to Heaven podcast.
He said, “To be honest, nothing happened in December. I spoke with Jon during that time.”
“We had another conversation with my agent while I was competing in the Dubai Desert Classic, and we obviously discussed it after the competition.
“After that, we essentially had a week to figure everything out, and here we are.”
According to Hatton, a coin toss helped in the decision.
“I had a Sunday night deadline of 7:30 p.m.,” he continued. “I signed the contract at 7:29 with the assistance of a coin toss.”
Hatton continued, saying, “I didn’t take the decision lightly; it was a really difficult one. I talked to a number of people, and we did sign at 7:29 p.m.
The Englishman claimed that LIV was appealing for a variety of reasons. He was drawn in, for instance, by the worldwide schedule.
Hatton also talked about the risk he is taking by qualifying for major championships and his prospects for the Ryder Cup.
He said on the podcast, “The majors and the Ryder Cup was potentially the risk and the scary thing for me.”
“I mean, I’ve talked to Luke [Donald, the European captain], and I’m competing in all four majors this year.
“I want to party with as many people as I can until that ship [will] sail for me.I’d like to think everyone thinks the Ryder Cup is pretty special to me.
“There’s a lot of golf to be played between now and then, but I want to be on the team at Bethpage.”
That September, Hatton went 3-0-1 as Europe defeated the United States by five points. He also won the Sunday singles match against Brian Harman.
