After a difficult 2023 season, Sergio Perez is beginning the last season of his Red Bull contract.
Sergio Perez will be a candidate for the second Red Bull seat for the 2025 season and beyond, according to Helmut Marko, if he can maintain the form he showed at the end of the 2023 campaign. The Mexican will have fierce competition to keep his motivation as he approaches the last year of his contract with the current champions.
With two victories in the first four rounds, 34-year-old Perez got his 2023 campaign off to a great start. But he didn’t win any more Grands Prix in the eighteen races that followed, and his mid-season slump raised rumors that Daniel Ricciardo might take his place a year before his contract was set to expire in 2024.
But with three races left and his Formula One career in jeopardy, Perez put together three straight top-four finishes to defeat Lewis Hamilton’s challenge and secure Red Bull’s first-ever one-two finish in the Drivers’ Championship.
Regarding Perez’s contractual status, Marko gave Motorsport-Total the following explanation: “He still has a contract for 2024. He has the final say. We can certainly discuss a further extension if he continues to drive in the same manner as he finished the previous races.
The Austrian also provided an update on Ricciardo’s situation, saying that he needs to demonstrate that he clearly has Yuki Tsunoda under control. Ricciardo is a fellow Red Bull hopeful. Then he could run for office.
Even though Ricciardo and Tsunoda appear to be a formidable combination for the VCARB team, Perez is focusing only on the first few races of the 2024 season. “The season’s opening will be extremely hectic,” he remarked.
My main goal is to concentrate on the first few races. I don’t believe I’m establishing any deadlines or anything similar. I just want to concentrate on the first five races to make the most out of it because I know it will drain a lot of my energy, and I don’t want any interruptions.
Perez will most likely have the tools to compete at the front of the field in 2024 if the preseason test in Bahrain is any indication. He and teammate Max Verstappen showed impressive speed when the brand-new RB20 concept made its tarmac debut.
