Reports suggested that Jon Rahm’s LIV Golf debut at Mayakoba was set to be be postponed due to food poisoning among players and caddies, but the event is still going ahead as planned

Despite rumors that the opening round of the LIV Golf season would be postponed due to food poisoning among players and caddies, the event at Mayakoba is proceeding as scheduled.

There were rumors that the bug would prevent Friday’s first round in Mexico from happening, but LIV has told Mirror Sport that the schedule for the week will not be altered. It is unlikely that Jon Rahm, the winner of the Masters, sighed in relief after making his debut on the Saudi-sponsored circuit.

When Rahm joined the LIV setup in December, he signed a record-breaking contract worth an estimated £450 million, making it the biggest coup for the breakaway league to date.

This week, the Spaniard will also serve as the captain of his recently assembled Legion XIII squad, which includes two additional new recruits and a beneficiary of LIV Promotions. After making it through the promotion event at the end of 2023, Kieran Vincent will join his older brother Scott on the LIV roster, paired with Rahm.

Caleb Surratt, one of the best amateur athletes in the world, joined Rahm’s team after turning pro to compete in the breakaway league and the Legion setup. The winner of the green jacket then introduced Tyrrell Hatton, his Ryder Cup partner, to elegantly complete his lineup.

After beginning his season on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour in January, Hatton signed with the LIV league at the last minute. Rahm welcomed Tyrell as a new teammate to the league this week, saying, “I really admire Tyrrell.” I’m pretty good friends with him.

“Most of the world’s major events, including the Ryder Cup, have featured us on the same stage. We’re unbeaten as a team, and I’m proud of that. It’s a person who has consistently ranked highly on my list. It seems like a person who can function in any situation.

I think we get along so well on the team because of a number of obvious reasons that I think we won’t go into here, but I also think we see a lot of ourselves in each other, which is probably why I get along so well with him.

“I’m glad he accepted the offer and joined us now.” But Rahm acknowledged that he was left worrying about whether Hatton would genuinely accept his offer to join, so it wasn’t all easy. “We have sufficient things to contemplate,” the two-time major winner continued.

“I was concerned that Tyrrell might not be able to make it this week. Yes, that was something I was seriously considering.” Rahm will tee off alongside reigning champion Talor Gooch and past Open winner Cam Smith on the first hole of the shotgun start on Friday to start his week.
