Charley Hull from England says she only smokes when she’s stressed, but she plans to give it up soon.
Following last week’s US Women’s Open, Charley Hull revealed she only rips darts when she’s stressed out and that she plans to quit, drawing comparisons between herself and two-time major champion John Daly.
When Hull, 28, was seen smoking cigarettes on the course for the first time in public during last week’s major at Lancaster Country Club, it sent golf fans into a frenzy.
Before the tournament, she was spotted smoking a cigarette and signing autographs for young fans.
However, the English LPGA Tour player has revealed to reporters that she smokes purely for relaxation and doesn’t even enjoy it.
Hull, who has previously been transparent about her issues with mental health, asserts that she only overindulges in smoking when she sees slow play ahead of her on the golf course.
Hull talked candidly about her smoking habit after closing with a respectable round of 3-under par to finish just outside the top 20 at the US Women’s Open. This, for some reason, shocked a lot of golf fans on social media.
Hull said:
“I find it humorous because I go to the gym regularly and lead a very healthy lifestyle. All I do is smoke. I don’t drink much. I can have a good time without drinking, so I don’t really need it.
“Yeah, listen, my dad, who is 75 years old, has smoked 40 cigarettes a day since he was 12 years old, and my nephew, who is 25 years old, smokes.” Since everyone in my family smokes, I haven’t found it to be strange.
“I detest tobacco use. When I was younger, I used to swear at my dad for smoking, but now I believe it’s something I do occasionally when I’m stressed. Last year, when I was feeling a little stressed, I kind of vaped. I wanted to stop, even though vaping is more convenient than smoking because you can do it indoors all the time. I reasoned that if I were to smoke, I would go outside and do so. I smoke a lot more than I should when playing golf in a slow round.
“But hear me out—I’m about to stop. The only question is when.”
Hull also reported to reporters that she was inundated with remarks about darts ripping from golf enthusiasts.
One fan called out to her from behind the ropes, and she had the ideal response.
Hull also disclosed that she turned down a date request from a golf fan who approached her during the competition.
It’s understood that Hull just recently began dating a famous person.
