Patrick Cantlay silences critics at Genesis Invitational after calls for ‘huge’ PGA Tour fine

Patrick Cantlay is in contention to win the Genesis Invitational and end his 18-month wait for a PGA Tour title after three solid rounds of golf at Riviera Country Club

Even though Patrick Cantlay was criticized for disobeying a PGA Tour regulation, he is still expected to win the Genesis Invitational.

Tony Johnstone, the former vice captain of the Presidents Cup, demanded that Cantlay pay a “huge fine” after he twice missed the putt at the beginning of the competition at the Riviera Country Club in California. Johnstone was incensed about the manners of the thirty-one-year-old.

Johnstone on X wrote, “Back to back shots and Cantlay hits a ball-spotter and then spectators around the green.” “Is it impossible for someone to shout “fore”?” “(Cantlay) should be nailed with a huge fine,” Johnstone continued.

Cantlay is on track to win his first PGA Tour championship since defending the BMW Championship in August 2022, despite the controversy. With two shots ahead of Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris, he shot a 70 on Saturday to get to 14 under par.

At the Genesis Invitational, Schauffele and Zalatoris both shot rounds of 65 on Saturday to put themselves in contention. Luke List is at 11 under par, three shots behind Cantlay, and one shot behind Harris English and Jason Day.

Cantlay is feeling optimistic about winning again despite the pursuing pack. He declared, “I played really well today; I didn’t make any long putts or anything.” “I didn’t really give myself a lot of opportunities, but overall it was a good day and I was in a good spot going into the last round.”

Schauffele, though, is also feeling optimistic. “You have to kind of fire on all cylinders to play good golf around Riviera, and been able to do that the last couple of days,” the Olympic champion continued. I just wanted to try something (Sunday). I see that Pat is still making birdies, so it appears that he is a difficult man to beat at this time.

It’s not possible to say that Rory McIlroy has a better chance of winning the Genesis Invitational than close friends Cantlay and Schauffele. The four-time major winner has completed rounds of 74, 66, and 69 to be four under par.

Nevertheless, McIlroy, who hasn’t won a major in ten years, is certain that he has a strong game going into the April Masters. “I did some good work last week,” he declared. I felt pretty good about everything this week, despite the fact that I was obviously not quite in contention, when my coach Michael Bannon came over. The game is going fairly well.”

Due to illness, Tiger Woods had to withdraw on Friday and will not play in the final round on Sunday. The host of the competition, a 15-time major winner, said to spectators on X: “I would like to confirm that I had to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational due to illness, which we now know is influenza. I’m getting better and resting.

“I hope the players have a successful weekend. I want to express my regret for being unable to attend and my gratitude to Genesis and all of the supporters.”
