With this opportunity, Rory McIlroy could become just the third golfer in history to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Rory McIlroy, the hero of the European Ryder Cup and star of the PGA Tour, is one of six finalists for the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for 2023.
Although the 34-year-old McIlroy was unable to increase his major victory total this year, he did manage to win the Race to Dubai title and win it for a fifth time by winning twice at the Scottish Open and Dubai Desert Classic.
The Northern Irishman was also the top points scorer at the Ryder Cup with four points as Luke Donald’s Team Europe ran out five-point victors over Zach Johnson’s United States side at Marco Simone in Rome.
He posted 13 top-10 finishes in 18 events on the PGA Tour in 2023.
McIlroy will now attempt to become just the third ever golfer to win the coveted BBC SPOTY award.
Golf fans have been urged by former US Open champion Justin Rose to support and vote for McIlroy.

The last golfer to win the award was Sir Nick Faldo in 1989.
In 1957, Dai Rees became the first golfer to receive the honor.
It is puzzling that McIlroy, who won back-to-back major titles in 2014, did not win SPOTY in that year.
