Albon `worried’ over progress of F1 rivals

Alex Albon has admitted AlphaTauri’s recent resurgence is “worrying” for Williams, which could see them overtaken by sister team Red Bull.

Williams is currently seventh in the Constructors’ Championship after having a fantastic season going into 2022.

They have scored 21 points so far, with Albon scoring all of them after a difficult rookie year for young American Logan Sargeant.

AlphaTauri, on the other hand, had a poor first half of the season, with the first 16 races earning them just 5 points.

They had three pairs of drivers, with Nyck de Vries being replaced by Daniel Ricciardo before the Australian broke his left arm during the Dutch Grand Prix, leading to Liam Lawson taking the seat. The New Zealand rider impressed and his ninth place at the Singapore GP accounted for almost half of the team’s points total.

AlphaTauri has been getting closer to the points in recent races, which is starting to sow doubt in Albon’s mind.

“They were fast in Singapore and they will be fast again at all laps,” Albon told the media.

“I think their approach is quite critical and a little worrying.”

Williams scored just eight points in 2022 and finished last in the standings.

This is the 4th time in the last 5 seasons that they have won the wooden spoon but now, the situation seems to have changed. Albon’s performance was top-notch and the appointment of James Vowles as the new principal appears to have given the team a boost.

If Sargeant can discover his form in F1 or if he finds a driver to take it to the next level, then the team could go even further into the top five by 2024.
