Lucas Glover missed out on a spot on the US team for September’s Ryder Cup against Europe, but that hasn’t stopped him from speaking out about the controversy surrounding American players wanting to be paid money to participate in this event.

It was a week to forget for the Americans at Marco Simone Stadium in Rome, who lost to Luke Donald’s European team 16.5-11.5. In addition to problems on the field, they also encountered problems after rumors of a team “breaking up” arose midway through the event.

The reported dispute is said to revolve around Patrick Cantlay, who is said to be unhappy about not being paid to represent his country on the Ryder Cup stage.

While the US system is quick to downplay any kind of dispute within their camp, Cantlay himself has refused to quash reports of his anger over the money arguments wage. Many people were quick to criticize the stance of the former FedEx Cup champion, and most recently Glover.

At the age of 43, Glover put himself forward to earn his first ever Ryder Cup call-up having impressed on the PGA Tour throughout 2023. The American appeared to find form at the right time, winning back-to-back events at the Wyndham Championship and the FedEx St. Jude Championship just weeks before Zach Johnson confirmed his team.

Sadly for Glover he was overlooked by captain Johnson when his 12-man team was announced in early September. Nearly two months on, the 43-year-old has opened up on his near-miss, as well as the row regarding American players being paid to play.

“I would have loved to have been there [the Ryder Cup],” Glover told SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio.

“I think I could have brought some different things to the table.” Discussing the reported rift, the PGA Tour star went on: “It broke my heart the week after to hear how splintered the [locker] room was.

“And things about money, and all the other different things, that is not at all what the Ryder Cup stands for. Like what going on what I have been read and what I have been told. I have talked to some people that were there and in the fight and it breaks my heart to hear that. That is not what it is about.”
