Bean, an 11-time Tour winner, passed away after recent lung surgery

11-time PGA Tour winner Andy Bean has passed away, the PGA Tour confirmed Saturday. He is 70 years old.

Born on March 13, 1953 in LaFayette, Georgia, Bean was an outstanding student at the University of Florida, winning the 1973 NCAA team championship and earning All-American honors three times. He was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978.

Bean turned professional in 1975 and won his first Tour title two years later at the Doral-Eastern Open. He won three times in 1978, then won at least once in six of the next eight seasons, his last title coming at the 1986 Byron Nelson Golf Classic.

Bean also had three PGA Tour Champions victories, including the 2008 Charles Schwab Cup at age 55, and was a member of the 1979 and 1987 U.S. Ryder Cup teams.

Last month it was reported that Bean had undergone double lung replacement surgery after his battle with Covid-19. Tour confirmed he died in his hometown of Lakeland, Florida, after six weeks of struggling to recover. Bean is survived by his wife, Debbie, three daughters and grandchildren.
