Dustin Johnson eyes Ryder Cup captaincy despite LIV Golf snobbery

Dustin Johnson missed out on a spot on the 2023 United States Ryder Cup team, and the former Masters champion appears to have turned his attention to his role as national team captain.

Dustin Johnson aims to captain the United States Ryder Cup team, despite being left out of the 2023 squad after moving to LIV Golf.

Johnson was one of several LIV players to miss out on a spot in the 2023 Ryder Cup, with Brooks Koepka the only breakaway player to join both teams. The American’s absence from the most recent event was only his second absence from the match in the 13 years he has become a vital part of the United States’ Ryder Cup circuit.

The last two US teams have proven that there is plenty of competition to compete at their level, and with Johnson expected to be 41 by the time of the next Ryder Cup, the dates are His fight could be starting to come to an end.

Despite this, it appears he still wants some involvement, positioning himself as a future captain of the United States. According to Golf Monthly magazine, he said:
“Yes, I would love to do that [become Ryder Cup captain]. I love the Ryder Cup and I want to be a part of it and that would be something I would be willing to do if they wanted me to do it.”

Ahead of the 2023 Ryder Cup, Johnson spoke about missing out on a spot on his namesake Zach Johnson’s team. The two-time major champion was quick to admit he didn’t play his best golf in 2023, but felt he would have made the top 12 had he still played on the PGA tour.

“I really wanted to be a part of the team,” Johnson told the Palm Beach Post last month. “But to be honest, I didn’t play really well this year. But did I play well enough to make the team? Yes. I haven’t had the best year. Is that enough to form a team?

“I think so. If I played on the [PGA Tour], yeah, I would have made the team. Do I think I can help the US team? Absolutely.” Koepka, another LIV player, seized his opportunity to make the team at all four golf majors, finishing tied for second at the Masters, before winning the PGA Championship.

Meanwhile, Johnson did not take advantage but admitted to talking to the American captain about his desire to be part of his team in all four important events of the season. “We talked quite a bit. He is a good friend of mine,” the LIV Golf star added.

“So we talked. I told him I would love to be on the team. But like I said, I’m not playing well enough, especially not on Tour, I need to play well .”
