Mercedes confirm Singapore Grand Prix tweak despite Red Bull’s Max Verstappen fears

The W15 has undergone a dramatic alteration from Mercedes in advance of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

Mercedes has revealed a unique livery for the Singapore Grand Prix in honor of 50 years of Petronas, the title sponsor. This revelation comes after it was reported that Red Bull canceled their own unique design for the race on Sunday because of RB20 weight issues.

For a novel take on their 2024 design, the Silver Arrows have replaced the silver on the W15’s nose and sidepods with the recognizable “emerald green” of Petronas. Following the announcement, Lewis Hamilton remarked, “The livery looks incredible.”

“I am eager to see it on the vehicle in the garage tomorrow and to take it for a spin on Friday.” The fans will definitely enjoy getting a close-up look at it, and it will look stunning under Singapore’s lights.”

After a challenging weekend in Baku, Toto Wolff will now hope that the new livery brings better fortunes. With McLaren and Ferrari outpacing their competitors, the Brackley-based team was competing against Red Bull for the title of third-fastest team through the streets of Azerbaijan.

After taking two positions from the Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz crash on the penultimate lap, George Russell made his way onto the podium. Meanwhile, Hamilton started from the pit lane and ended up in P9, behind both Williams drivers.

Luckily, the Mercedes team will perform better in Singapore. Max Verstappen and Red Bull, on the other hand, are currently without a win in seven races and have fallen behind Lando Norris and McLaren in their respective championship battles.

Due to weight concerns, the Milton Keynes-based team was even forced to cancel a fan-designed livery scheme for the next two events, setting up what looks to be their toughest Grand Prix weekend of the season.

They stated in a statement issued on Tuesday: “Unfortunately, we discovered the paint used to create these bespoke, full car takeover liveries added unforeseen and undue weight to the bodywork of the RB20 when we came to the testing phase of what some REBL CUSTMS designs could look like in real life on the RB20.

“As you can probably expect, carrying extra weight degrades performance, so the team is still putting their best effort into making this car as competitive as they can for the rest of the 2024 season.

“Therefore, we regret to inform you that the team has decided not to run the REBL CUSTMS liveries on the RB20 at the Singapore and United States Grand Prix.”
