Tyrrell Hatton opens up on ‘brutal’ Masters moment with cryptic dig at Augusta National course

Tyrrell Hatton, who had earlier put himself in position to compete at the Masters, was left fuming after four-putting the last hole to finish the day over par at Augusta National.

Tyrrell Hatton, who four-putted the final green for a painful double bogey, said he was preventing himself from saying what he really thought of Augusta National.

After hitting the ball beautifully and finishing the first 17 holes in testing conditions at one-under par, the irate LIV Golf star expressed his frustration, calling himself “devastated.” Hatton, the 19th-ranked player in the world, attempted a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, but it landed three feet above the hole. His par putt also rolled seven feet down the hill. After that, he missed the bogey putt to finish at three over par with a 73.

The Ryder Cup star said, “It’s hard to take.” “How am I supposed to play golf around here and shoot under par? I have no idea.” I’m currently in my 23rd round of a tournament. Four of my rounds were below par.

“As for the previous, I’m at a loss for words. I’m pushing the hill, but the greens are getting faster. In fact, I thought I had missed the putt by a foot. All day, I’ve maintained a good pace. It’s gone like three feet over, and that’s how the cup sits (he waved his hand at a sharp angle).

It’s on an interesting slope, but you can’t see it on TV or anything. It’s challenging. I can already feel the breeze on my back from that brief putt. Thus, it doesn’t make the putt from right to left any simpler.

“Obviously, I struck it with a little firmness. While it may appear horrifying on television, a flat putt will only go one or two feet beyond, not six or eight feet. To be honest, I find it to be extremely brutal right now. I feel like I’m pretending to be brave in order to say or discuss what I want to.

When Hatton and Woods played together in a Major for the first time, the American superstar’s 82 became his highest-ever score in a Major. “Sure, he didn’t hit it how he wanted to, but also like putts that he had, like the greens are so fast out there,” the world No. 19 said in response to a question concerning Woods. You guys are unaware of how brutal even a putt from 2 1/2 feet is.

“They have a lot of turn. It will miss if you start it one centimeter beyond your start line. I’ve mentioned how awesome it is to see the child in me play alongside Tiger at the Masters.

“I’m definitely not blind to that. I feel like I played a pretty good round for 17 1/2 holes, but at the same time, I’m going out there competing, trying to put together the best round I can, and trying to move up the leaderboard. To tell the truth, I’m devastated.”

Hatton has only finished in the top 20 once in his seven prior visits, tying for 18th in 2021 after his final round 68, his only score in the 60s in this venue. He has never been afraid to voice his dissatisfaction about the first Major of the year, and he never hides his feelings.

Following rounds of 79 and 80 on the weekend, the Ryder Cup player called the course configuration “unfair” two years ago.

Hatton was also dissatisfied with the trio in front of him—Patrick Reed, Sungjae Im, and Kurt Kitagama—and their slow play in the second round on Friday. He remarked, “The guys in front have been so slow.” “The fact that it took the officials 32 holes to start the clock is pretty poor on their part.”
