Lewis Hamilton is ready to reach new heights in his F1 career, as George Russell’s role explains

Seven-time world champion Hamilton is enjoying the longest winning drought of his F1 career amid Mercedes’ struggles but believes his greatest achievement may be yet to come.

Lewis Hamilton believes winning a Formula 1 race again would be “probably the biggest victory of my career”.

The seven-time world champion is of course no stranger to the top rung of the F1 podium. No one in the history of the sport can match his record of 103 race victories.

But almost two years have passed since this last victory. Hamilton has not tasted victory in 2022, going the entire season without a win for the first time in its history and looks set to remain winless this year. His last two Mercedes cars were unable to compete with the dominant Red Bulls. Having signed a new contract until the end of 2025, he will be hoping that one of the next two machines will give him a better chance of overtaking Max Verstappen.

Hamilton continues to believe, at age 38, that he and his team can do it. And if anything, he leaves no doubt about his place among the many extraordinary achievements of his career to date.

“We will be back. We can do it,” he told Swiss newspaper Blick. “The next step towards the top podium is coming. And maybe that will be the biggest victory of my career.

“I hope that the amount of data we have collected this year will have an impact on the new car. That is the hope of the entire Mercedes team at both plants.” We all must always believe in our goals. And never give up.”

This new deal will keep him in F1 beyond his 40th birthday – something he previously said would not happen. Hamilton admits he “underestimated” how much he loved the sport and is now “much happier” than when he was younger, having discovered more about himself.

That doesn’t mean the British are 100% happy to be in F1 every day. “It became a story about love and hate,” he said. “There are days when I don’t want to go into the cockpit.”

But he insists his desire to succeed has always prevailed and now, in the form of teammate George Russell, there is another factor driving him forward. He say:
“Duels with teammate George also motivate me. You always have to be alert.”
