Xander Schauffele hits back at Jay Monahan after PGA Tour commissioner’s comments

Although Xander Schauffele feels that Jay Monahan still has a lot to prove to the membership, the commissioner is adamant that he is the best candidate to head the PGA Tour.

Xander Schauffele feels that sentiment is still present among the membership and that PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan is still untrustworthy.

Schauffele, 30, said that he had lost faith in Monahan during the summer and disclosed that there had been a rift between the players and management following the signing of an agreement to combine LIV Golf with the PGA and DP World Tours with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The American also criticized the organization for its lack of transparency and communication, specifically pointing out that it had announced the deal without telling its members.

Prior to The Players Championship on Tuesday at TPC Sawgrass, Monahan gave a press conference. Prior to last year’s Tour Championship, Monahan had not given a public speech. Even though players, like Schauffele, had previously called for him to step down, the commissioner bullishly backed himself to stay in the position.

“There are always things you look back and wish you had done differently,” he admitted. You can see that I could have handled that better when you go back to last summer, and I fully accept responsibility and accountability for that. I’m responsible for that.

But since then, we’ve gone on and accomplished a great deal, and I’ve learned from it. That has humbled me.

“I believe my leadership skills have improved, and I am extremely happy with the progress we have made since then.” “There’s been a lot of good-spirited debate among our board,” he continued.

“Considering what happened last summer, I don’t think anyone would be surprised by that. However, our front is one.

“I can’t speak for players in general, but I am the best person to lead us forward, especially considering the responsibility both boards have placed on me. Our board also supports me.” I am aware of that. I firmly feel that, and I’m committed to acting on it.

Schauffele, and the membership isn’t so certain, he says. After Monahan spoke for less than an hour, the seven-time Tour winner addressed the media for the first time. “Trust is something that’s pretty tender,” he said, adding that “words are words” and that “I would say, in my book, he’s got a long way to go.”

“He might be the one, but he still needs to earn the membership’s trust in my opinion. Although the [policy] board was present when he made some of those decisions, I’m sure they support him, but he still has a ways to go in my opinion.

When asked how Monahan could resolve the issue, Schauffele responded, “I haven’t really thought too much about how to alleviate the pains of an entire membership.”

He said, “I would consider myself pretty uninformed, to be completely honest.” “As I felt like I did, I didn’t get any information, so I haven’t really sought out a whole lot of it.”
