Rory McIlroy, the four-time major winner, had yet another difficult week while competing on the PGA Tour at the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.
Is it implausible to propose that Rory McIlroy was dissatisfied with his actions during the Arnold Palmer Invitational?
Though he began the season with great success in the Middle East, McIlroy entered the PGA Tour’s signature event coming off the back of some lackluster performances.
He had to struggle to make the cut, but in true McIlroy fashion, he appeared out of nowhere and shot a brilliant day 68 to put himself in the running.
Given that McIlroy is only five strokes behind world number one Scottie Scheffler, you would have thought he had a good chance.
However, the Northern Irishman’s Sunday at Bay Hill got off to a terrible start, and by the turn, he was an incredible 5-over par.
Early on, it was clear that he was frustrated, and on the third hole, he vented his resentment by making a tiny dent in the green’s fringe.
That came after his 11-foot par attempt slid just to the right of the cup.
To be fair, the outburst paled in significance compared to his third round hissy fit, in which he was caught on camera smashing up a tee box marker.
To be fair, McIlroy wasn’t the only player who felt a little bit let down by their performance.
Wyndham Clark was also captured on camera chunking a chip early in the third round, then slamming his wedge into the ground.
Later, Clark was charged with breaking the rules hastily. He refuted any cheating.
The video of McIlroy tearing up the green left a lot of golf fans unhappy.
One wrote on X, “Mr. Palmer would be receiving a strongly worded letter if he were still alive.”
“Time for penalties for his behavior,” said an additional. For these millionaires, fines have no significance.”
McIlroy finished in a tie for 21st place with a final round score of 4-over 76.
With the exception of the cancelled AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, McIlroy has now made three starts on the PGA Tour and placed in the top 25 each time.
McIlroy’s next target is the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. 2019 saw McIlroy win the Players.
