Having completed a 30-month prison sentence, Cabrera will be making a controversial return to Tour golf at this week’s Trophy Hassan II in Morocco.
Angel Cabrera, a former Masters champion who spent more than two years in prison for domestic abuse charges, is scheduled to make a contentious comeback to the golf circuit this week.
After being found guilty of charges against his former girlfriends Micaela Escudero and Cecilia Torres Mana, Cabrera was released in August of 2023 after serving his sentence in one of Argentina’s most notorious prisons.
Cabrera is officially entered in the field for this week’s PGA Tour Champions Trophy Hassan II at Royal Golf Dar es Salam in Morocco, despite his recent controversy.
In December, the 54-year-old made his comeback to competitive golf at the Latinoamerica Development Tour on the PGA Tour, held in his home country of Argentina, where he tied for 10th place.
Since then, he has also placed third in the South Open, an event that attracts both current and prospective Korn Ferry Tour players, held in his home country of Argentina.
When Cabrera makes his comeback to the American senior circuit, he’ll be teeing it up with players like Jim Furyk, Miguel Angel Jimenez, and Colin Montgomerie.
The two-time major champion has said in the past that it would be his “dream” to play the Masters at Augusta National again, but if he is not granted a visa to enter the country, that may not be possible.
He remarked last year, “It would be a great privilege to return and to attend the Champions Dinner with so many of the greatest players in golf.”
If Cabrera’s travel troubles can be resolved, it has been made clear by the Augusta National chairman, Fred Ridley, that he would be welcomed back to the iconic venue.
“Angel is undoubtedly one of our greatest champions,” he declared. As of right now, he is unable to enter the country.
“I am aware that the procedure is being worked through, but he does not have a visa.
“We’ll be happy to have him back if he can resolve those legal matters, and we certainly wish him luck with that.”
At the 2024 Masters, Cabrera is presently listed as a “past champion not playing.”
When he participated in the Masters in 2018, he failed to make the cut for the second consecutive year.
