Rory McIlroy has opened up about his form as he aims to win his first green jacket as the build-up to the Masters at Augusta National takes shape.
Despite his difficulties at the Genesis International, Rory McIlroy feels he is improving, and he faces Jon Rahm in the Masters soon.
McIlroy has not yet received a green jacket, and his best performance at Augusta National occurred in 2022 when he came in second. The four-time major championship winner is now focusing on winning the one outstanding award that has eluded him throughout his illustrious career.
He is now optimistic that he can pick up some steam in the upcoming months, despite a lackluster performance at the Genesis International, where he is four shots behind Patrick Cantlay going into the final round. His next events are scheduled for the Cognizant Classic before the end of the month, followed by the Players Championship, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the Valero Texas Open before the orthodox starts.
During the Genesis International, McIlroy stated, “Pebble was a bit of a write-off.” “On the opening day, the sudden drop from six-under to one-under made for an extremely peculiar round. And then, well, it was just kind of—I don’t know, I wouldn’t say—one of those weeks where, you know, I wasn’t really in it, even though I was giving it everything I had.
He provided an update on his health, saying, “I did some good work last week.” “After my coach Michael Bannon visited, I felt good about everything this week, despite the fact that I was obviously not quite in the running. The game is going fairly well.”
Some competitors for the Masters title may grow nervous after McIlroy revealed that, despite some difficulties in the California PGA Tour event, he is starting to find his form. LIV Golf rebel Rahm, who will be defending his title at Augusta National in April, is one celebrity who will be trying to break a pattern that has followed him throughout his career.
Rahm acknowledged that he was excited to win the title again at the Mexican Open in 2023, indicating that it was evidently something that had crossed his mind occasionally throughout his career. “It wouldn’t be the worst thing if I could make the Mexico Open my next defense,” he admitted after learning that he had only successfully defended the Spanish Open as a professional.
The only other times Rahm has accomplished such a feat are when he won back-to-back titles at the Spanish Open, which Tony Finau denied the Spaniard a second straight victory in Mexico. Dustin Johnson, meanwhile, seems determined to improve upon his performance at the Masters last year.
“Last year I didn’t play very well, to be honest, but it kind of goes with how much effort that goes into it too,” the 2020 Green Jacket winner admitted. It goes without saying that I could have worked much harder. I’m a little more motivated and determined this year.
He went on, “I don’t enjoy not playing well,” threatening his opponents as he won a LIV match in Las Vegas. “I enjoy playing well, coming up here, chatting with you guys after the weeks are over, and holding up the trophy,” he continued.
