Tiger Woods issues-veiled dig at Nike after launching ‘Sun Day Red’ brand

Despite having one of the most recognizable partnerships in sports history, legendary golfer Tiger Woods and American company Nike decided to part ways at the start of 2024.

After confirming his next course of action after leaving Nike, Tiger Woods reiterates his desire to have “a brand that I’m proud of.”

Woods parted ways with Nike earlier this year, capping a fruitful 27-year collaboration during which he captured 15 major championships. The 48-year-old, who hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since his vehicle accident in 2021, is the only player to have won more majors than Jack Nicklaus (18).

Golf fans were taken aback when Woods and Nike announced their separation, and they have been curious about what comes next. On Monday, he declared the debut of his new line of clothing, which he calls “Sun Day Red” (SDR), after the color he wears on the last day of competitions.

Shortly after the announcement, Woods gave a press conference in Los Angeles where he explained his decision to start his own brand in collaboration with TaylorMade. “This is the ideal moment in my life,” Woods remarked. It’s a transitional situation. I am no longer a child.

“Going forward, I want to be proud of my brand. That’s me, Sunday red. First, there was mom (Kultida). As a junior golfer, I wore red because, according to her, I was a Capricorn and could win tournaments.

“As it happens, I attend Stanford University, which is red. On the last day of each and every tournament, we would wear red, and I have done the same in every tournament I have participated in as a professional. It’s simply come to represent me.”

To introduce SDR, Woods and TaylorMade have partnered. Prior to their well-publicized breakup, he also owned his own brand under Nike, called “TW Collection.”

In a press release, Woods said, “I have gained a wealth of knowledge over the years and have a lifetime of experience modifying my clothing and footwear to help me play better based on its construction. “Over the years, there have been things I’ve done that no one has ever heard of. I’m prepared to reveal those secrets to everyone.

“Sun Day Red is for people who share those values, whether it’s in life or on the course. We will represent a love of playing and competing.” Our guiding principle will be to prioritize the athlete when choosing products.”

One of the most well-known golf brands, TaylorMade is primarily recognized for its equipment production. They’ve collaborated with some of the biggest names in golf, including Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, and Scottie Scheffler.

David Abeles, CEO of TaylorMade, continued, “This brand stands alone. I’m thrilled that it is run by a group of leaders who are not affiliated with TaylorMade and is independent, allowing us to concentrate on the most important aspects of this brand.”
