Caleb Surratt is LIV Golf’s latest star having signed for Legion XIII this month, but the teenager required the help of his teammate Tyrrell Hatton to check into a hotel
Adolescent-LIV Before this week’s tournament, golfer Caleb Surratt was informed he was too young to check into his hotel in Las Vegas, so he had to enlist the assistance of teammate Tyrrell Hatton.
Along with Hatton and Kieran Vincent, Surratt was added to Jon Rahm’s newly formed Legion XIII squad during the offseason. The 19-year-old has traveled to Las Vegas for the second LIV tournament of the season after making his debut at Mayakoba last week.
Though it seemed to begin with a minor hiccup, the former star player for the University of Tennessee was too young to check into his hotel room for the tournament.
Luckily for Surratt, Hatton realized the problem quickly, but he was compelled to inform the world’s media during Wednesday’s pre-tournament press conference. “I kind of kept looking over to Caleb when I checked in yesterday,” Hatton said.
“After I completed checking in, I kind of wandered over to check on him because he seemed nervous. When I got there, the woman checking him in informed me that he needed a reservation with a person over 21 in order to stay in the room.
“In order to ensure he had a bed for the night, I had to give him my driver’s license.” The Legion team seems to have shared some amusement regarding their age disparities, as Surratt ventured to guess the captain Rahm’s age. Rahm remarked, “We’ve had some funny conversations with Caleb and what he thought we were.”
He informed me right away, “Man, I had no idea you were only 29.” Based on the tone of his statement, I believe he believed me to be closer to 40 than 30.”
Surratt made his professional debut in Mexico, looking more than comfortable considering his youth and lack of professional experience. The teenager finished the week ahead of players like Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, and Bubba Watson, tying for 13th place.
By doing this, the young player helped Legion win the team title and pocketed an additional bonus in addition to a cool £262,000 ($330k) in winnings during the first week. The former Walker Cup winner is optimistic about his career after such a strong start.
“I realize it’s a bold statement coming from a 19-year-old, but I can’t think of a better way to start my process and set my objectives than to make winning my main priority.
“I’m just setting the bar so low if my goal in learning about pro golf is to live up to everyone’s expectations and impress them all. My ceiling is really high, which is kind of allowing me to be in the best situations possible to learn from the best players. Playing with Tyrrell and Rahm is the best combination there is. That really aids me.
