A number of the PGA Tour’s biggest names have been linked with a move to LIV Golf in recent weeks, and Martin Kaymer has confirmed he is about to add a star to his Cleeks GC team
Former world No. 1 Martin Kaymer has revealed that LIV Golf will be welcoming a new European talent to Cleeks GC for the 2024 season. This player has not yet been given a name.
As one of the twelve team captains, Kaymer assumed command of the Cleeks and became one of the most well-known figures in Europe to join LIV. In 2023, his four-man squad had a difficult season, placing them 10th out of 12 in the team standings.
Following a difficult season, Kaymer will lead a revamped Cleeks squad into the 2024 campaign after Graeme McDowell and Bernd Wiesberger both left the all-European group.
While McDowell moved to Brooks Koepka’s Smash GC, Wiesberger chose to sever all ties with LIV and rejoin the DP World Tour. Speaking with National Club Golfer, Kaymer revealed that Kalle Samooja, the winner of LIV Promotions, had signed a contract for 2024 and that another European name would be revealed soon.
Following Samooja’s addition, Kaymer stated: “We’re still searching for the fourth, which we will most likely make public in the coming days. We’ll see who joins the Cleeks because there are a few names in the hat; however, we know that we’ll have a good team and a nice environment with friendly guys.”
He went on to say, “It’s going to be a European team,” confirming that the new recruit would be European. It was always the intention to have a European Cleeks squad. That is the path we wish to take, but it is difficult because there are a lot more factors to take into account—especially for those who join—than there were when we first had the opportunity to join LIV.
“However, most of the guys still have a lot of questions, so I want to provide them with as much information as I can to help them make an easy decision.” Although the identity of the fourth and final player is still unknown, Kaymer’s remarks follow the rumors that two of Europe’s biggest names were considering a move.
The Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood was contacted by the breakaway league, but he chose to turn down the offer, according to the Telegraph. LIV then focused on Tyrrell Hatton, another Englishman, who acknowledged that conversations had taken place at the Dubai Desert Classic the previous week.
“Several people, I’d say, have had conversations,” Hatton remarked. “I believe that’s just a part of golf right now.” But for the time being, it seems the European is happy enough to play golf where he is. He went on, “I’m quite happy playing on the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour.”
