Rory McIlroy did not show up in any form at this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards, despite being one of the six nominees.
Mary Earps, the goalkeeper for Manchester United and England, emerged victorious, followed by retired cricketer Stuart Broad in second place and heptathlete Katarina Mary Johnson-Thompson in third.
Previous nominees have appeared via video link, but McIlroy did not show up at all. Instead, his friend and Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood took over for a video chat.
Why Did Rory McIlroy Snub SPOTY ?
Although he won two majors and the Ryder Cup in 2014, McIlroy finished second in that year’s awards ceremony behind Lewis Hamilton. No explanation has been provided for his absence, but there was some conjecture that maybe he harbors resentment towards Hamilton.
Winner Earps said, “First of all, I’m so humbled to be on a list of such incredible athletes.”
“It’s amazing how sport unites people from all over the world, and hearing about everyone’s experiences has been wonderful. Congratulations to each and every one of you.”
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me! I am deeply humbled and honored by this, as it represents the pinnacle of all sports accolades. While the past few years have been amazing, this is really amazing.
“I wouldn’t be here without my loved ones by my side, who have supported me during the really difficult times. It hasn’t been an easy journey.
“I’ve accomplished more in the past two years than I ever could have dreamed.” I’d like to express my gratitude to my goalkeeping coaches, teammates, and coaches.
