Sergio Perez’s father, Antonio Perez Garibay, has claimed that Red Bull’s RB19 was built to support Max Verstappen’s driving style and not his son’s.

All season, Pérez has struggled to keep up with Verstappen’s pace, with the Dutchman often looking like he is driving a completely different car to his team-mate.

A claim that was denied by Red Bull, but that did not stop Pérez’s father from insisting that his son must adapt to Verstappen’s driving style due to the car’s settings favoring the double world champion.

Speaking to Mexican media outlet ESTO, the 64-year-old confirmed Red Bull drove the car in favor of Verstappen.

“Checo continues to have difficulty with the vehicle because of something we haven’t discovered yet,” he said. “The car is ready for Max. Max drives with all the front grips, and Checo has been driving all his life and he’s been driving with the rear grips all this time.”

“So today Checo has to adapt to driving a car, and Max doesn’t.”

Perez Sr then insisted that one day Mexico will have an F1 world champion, reminding everyone of the 33-year-old’s role in helping Red Bull win the season’s constructors’ championship this and last year.

“Checo Pérez’s position in the drivers’ championship is the one for which he was hired:
second place,” he added.

“There’s only one place to be a champion. Checo has to work, he has to earn it. This whole thing was built up for Max to be there.

He added: “When Checo finished in 10th place, we were very proud that he won by a point. “Today he finished second and we were angry, we wanted him to be first.

“The only thing I can tell you is that Mexico will have an F1 world champion and this weekend is the second time Checo is F1 champion, in the constructors’ championship.”
