Max Verstappen was booed by fans of teammate Sergio Perez and Red Bull team principal Christian Horner at the US Grand Prix, resolve the situation
Red Bull director Christian Horner predicts Max Verstappen will be booed at the Mexican Grand Prix, following a chilly reception at the US Grand Prix last week.
Verstappen was loudly booed as he
stepped onto the podium after winning the race, while some fans chanted the name of teammate Sergio Perez. The Mexican is extremely popular in the United States and, with Texas bordering Mexico, his supporters have been vocal on the Circuit of the Americas.
And Horner expects Verstappen to receive a similar reception at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, but insists it is “water off a duck’s back” for the three-time F1 world champion. When asked about the boos, Horner replied:
“I don’t think Max would get the warmest welcome in Mexico!
“But that’s water off a duck’s back. This year you’re the bad guy, next year you’re the hero. “However, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko criticized the fans who booed Verstappen.
“We are in contact with many Mexicans,” Marko said “The majority are very friendly and fair, but There have always been those who, let’s say enthusiastically, do not respect fair sporting standards.
“But we’re not worried, we’re happy to go to Mexico.” Meanwhile, Verstappen was less than impressed with his reception, telling Dutch media:
“In the end I was the one to bring home the silverware so it’s all good for me!”
While Verstappen won the race, Perez finished fifth before Lewis Hamilton’s disqualification pushed him to fourth.
Reflecting on the race and thinking about his home Grand Prix in Mexico, Perez said:
“It was quite difficult to progress.
“It was really difficult, especially in the beginning. I was really happy with my second stint [on] the medium [tyre], but then when I went on to the hard, I seemed to struggle a bit and it wasn’t as good as I was hoping to have the pace.
“I was hoping to have a lot more pace left. We know we’ve taken a wrong direction for the weekend with the set-ups that we have to do, so I’m optimistic for Mexico.”
