Red Bull introduced updates to the RB21 that better suited Max Verstappen’s driving style, helping him secure a strong win after a bold overtake at turn one. From that moment on, he maintained control at the front of the pack.
Now, as Formula 1 heads to Monaco, Verstappen—a four-time world champion—will be looking to repeat his success and close the gap to championship leader Oscar Piastri.
However, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has tempered expectations, urging fans not to get ahead of themselves. “That was just Imola. Things could be very different at the next Grand Prix,” he told OE24, pointing out that Monaco’s layout—with only slow-speed corners—is a completely different challenge.
Marko added a note of caution for Verstappen: “Things could go much worse there.” Still, he praised the Dutchman’s skill, saying, “Max showed once again why he’s the best—only he can spot and seize an opportunity like that at the start.”
Despite McLaren currently having the upper hand, Verstappen has muscled his way into a competitive position in the title race. He is just 22 points behind Piastri and only trails Lando Norris, who sits second, by nine points.
As last season proved, Verstappen doesn’t need the fastest car to win. With McLaren facing the pressure to maintain their lead, he could be in a prime position to capitalize.
Ultimately, Red Bull’s championship hopes will depend on how well they continue to develop the RB21. Team principal Christian Horner has described McLaren’s edge as puzzling but hinted it might not last.
Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur suggested McLaren could soon be impacted by a new technical directive in Spain aimed at limiting flexi-wings—potentially giving Red Bull a chance to catch up.
If Red Bull closes the performance gap, Verstappen is more than capable of doing the rest. Monaco may be a crucial moment in the season, and if Max takes another win, we could be headed for a thrilling title fight in 2025.
