Before leaving for the Olympics in Paris, Rory McIlroy was practicing on the Old Course at St Andrews when he couldn’t help but laugh at an American heckler during a Ryder Cup match.
On Monday afternoon, during a practice round on the renowned Old Course at St Andrews, Rory McIlroy soundly corrected a boisterous American heckler.
Three days before the Olympic Golf Tournament at Le Golf National in Paris began, McIlroy, 35, was haphazardly practicing at the renowned Open venue.
Less than two weeks have passed since the Northern Ireland player startled everyone by missing the cut at The 152nd Open at Royal Troon.
After that, he took off for a vacation in Portugal.
On Monday afternoon, as the World No. 3 casually went about his business on the Old Course, word quickly spread on social media that McIlroy was in town.
By the time McIlroy arrived at the short par-4 18th hole at St Andrews, hundreds of spectators had descended upon the four-time major winner.
St Andrews is currently preparing for the AIG Women’s Open, which takes place there from August 22–25, by erecting the grandstands.
A boisterous Miami-based American heckler expressed his desire to show McIlroy how much Florida adores him.
At the moment, McIlroy resides in Jupiter, Florida.
The man on the right flank of the 18th continued to yell for America.
Others could only laugh nervously.
McIlroy turned to face him, gave a wave, and then yelled, “You’re not going to love us next year,” with his hands cupped around his mouth.
The British fans gathered around the 18th green of the Old Course at St Andrews applauded and laughed at his remarks.
McIlroy was obviously referring to the highly anticipated Ryder Cup match in 2025 at Bethpage Black in New York, where Keegan Bradley’s USA will take on Luke Donald’s Europe in an attempt to defend their title.
Since the “Miracle at Medinah” in 2012, Europe has not triumphed in the Ryder Cup on American territory.
Bradley’s appointment to the USA came as a surprise, but Donald is still in charge for Europe.
Bradley was chosen by the PGA after Tiger Woods declined the position.
Few people anticipated that McIlroy would be competing in today’s Old Course 18-hole event.
This is due to the fact that the Men’s Olympic Golf Tournament begins on Thursday.
Nevertheless, Paris isn’t that far away.
Moreover, McIlroy doesn’t actually fly economy.
Today, GolfMagic was also at the Old Course at St Andrews.
We saw McIlroy smash a 16-foot tee shot.
McIlroy has decided to play golf for Ireland in the Olympics.
His close friend Shane Lowry, who carried the flag during last week’s opening ceremony, has joined him on Team Ireland.
Global No. 1 Prior to the tournament, Scottie Scheffler is favored, closely followed by Xander Schauffele, the reigning Olympic champion and Open champion who has taken McIlroy’s spot as the world’s second-ranked player.
Because they are ranked in the top 15 in the world, Team USA has four entries this week.
Team USA in Paris also consists of Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa.
