A private investigator was reportedly hired by Rory McIlroy to serve Erica Stoll with divorce papers 24 hours after he won the Wells Fargo Championship.
According to a report, Rory McIlroy served Erica Stoll with divorce papers by using a private investigator.
The information was obtained from a Belfast Telegraph article that ran over the weekend while McIlroy was taking a well-earned week off from playing professional golf during the hectic major season.
McIlroy’s private plane was in Italy, according to the flight tracker radaratlas2 on X. It is possible that the golfer attended a wedding, but that has not been confirmed.
Just 24 hours after winning his 26th PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship, McIlroy filed for divorce from his seven-year wife on May 13.
According to the BT report, on May 9, between 9:06 and 9:08 p.m. EDT, McIlroy digitally signed the documents.
Thomas Sasser, the same attorney who defended Tiger Woods during his divorce from Elin Nordegren following the revelation of his extramarital affairs, filed the lawsuit in Palm Beach County Court.
Records from the court also indicate that Carl Woods gave Erica the summons.
In addition to being a licensed private investigator and a certified homicide investigator, Woods joined the police force in 1987.
The BT reported:
According to Woods’ filing, on May 13, at 9.58 a.m., he received the divorce papers from Sasser’s firm, and at 10.30 a.m., he personally served them to Stoll at the McIlroy family home in the upscale Jack Nicklaus development The Bear’s Club.
“He described Stoll as a thirty-something white woman with blonde hair who was thin, standing between five and eight feet tall, and not wearing glasses.
“Stoll was served a summons, informing her that she had twenty days to respond in writing to her husband’s petition with the circuit court clerk.”
Moreover, the document said: “You will not be protected by a phone call. If you want the court to hear your side of the story, you must file your written response along with the parties’ names and the case number mentioned above.
“You risk losing the case and having your property, money, and wages taken without further notice from the court if you fail to file your response on time.
“There are additional legal prerequisites. You might want to give an attorney a call immediately. You can contact a legal aid office (found in the phone book) or an attorney referral service if you don’t know any attorneys.”
McIlroy hasn’t yet discussed his divorce in public.
Nor does he wish to do so.
When a reporter questioned him about his personal life during the PGA Championship, he responded sharply.
In other places, unverified DailyMail rumors claim the golfer is in a romantic relationship with Amanda Balionis, a CBS golf reporter.
This week is McIlroy’s scheduled PGA Tour event.
Right now, the 35-year-old Northern Irishman is the overwhelming favorite to win the RBC Canadian Open.
The Canadian Open was won by McIlroy in both 2019 and 2022.
Following his victory in the latter event, the golfer took a shot at Greg Norman, the commissioner of LIV Golf.
