Following Lando Norris’ P2 finish at the Chinese Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg had a few grievances against the McLaren driver.
After it became known that Lando Norris, the star of McLaren, had placed a bet with his race engineer about losing to Ferrari in the Chinese Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg questioned the driver’s mentality.
Ultimately, the McLaren driver delivered an incredible performance, finishing comfortably ahead of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc in positions P4 and P5, respectively, and defeating Sergio Perez of Red Bull in P2.
But Norris disclosed following the race: “I wagered on how much we would finish behind the Ferraris today. I took thirty-five seconds to think. And by that, I was very wrong. I’m content to be mistaken about myself and my own wagers, so yeah.
During his post-race analysis for Sky Sports F1, Rosberg called out the McLaren driver for his pessimism. “There, you were talking about Lando’s strategy,” he said.
You know, he’s a little bit of a ‘glass half empty’ guy. I’m not sure if pre-race betting on Ferrari to win will pay off. That’s not, in my opinion, the best course of action overall. I believe that more optimism would be beneficial.
World champion and fellow commentator Damon Hill provided context for this viewpoint by saying, “Nico, I know you’re familiar with it, but I think that’s Lando’s dry British sense of humor, but you’re aware of that.”
Following the race, Norris expressed that the outcome had completely caught him off guard, but he also emphasized how powerful the machinery felt beneath him.
But Norris later acknowledged to being too “negative” when evaluating his own performances in an interview with the world champion of 2016.
“It could be good [in Miami when upgrades arrive next time],” he said. I like how upbeat you are. On the other hand, I’m constantly really pessimistic. Let’s see.
“I’m excited to visit Miami. Yes, in the past it hasn’t been my best track. Although it hasn’t been our best song, we must celebrate right away. I’ll see you in Miami.”
