On the eve of the 2024 Masters, Jordan Spieth expressed his extreme frustration with his performance thus far on the PGA Tour.
On the eve of the 2024 Masters, Jordan Spieth acknowledged that his lackluster play on the PGA Tour this year has confused him.
After starting the Valero Texas Open with an extremely entertaining 1-over 73, Spieth will have to fight to make the cut.
Five bogeys, four birdies, a double bogey, and a hole-in-one at the par-3 16th hole comprised his round.
Spieth will play in his eighth event of the 2024 season at the Texas Open. So far, he has been disqualified twice and missed two cuts.
His best result was third in the limited-field signature stop in Hawaii at The Sentry in January.
Spieth’s failure to make cuts at the Players and Valspar Championship is crucial.
The American is having trouble with his game, much like Rory McIlroy, and the first major at Augusta National is approaching.
Spieth told reporters in Texas, “It just seems like I’m playing so much better than I’ve been scoring and it doesn’t like look like it.”
“It’s hard to explain,” he continued. Compared to the missed cuts I’ve experienced, I’ve played far worse and had multiple top-10 finishes.
It’s just incredibly strange. I feel like my game is fine, but I’m not getting very far with it.
“It’s really annoying because, despite driving the living p— out of the ball today, I chose the incorrect line on drive number 14, which is the only drive that I honestly missed by about five or six yards straight ahead of where I was looking before I couldn’t find it.
“I realized that I was 4-over and that my driving statistics no longer reflected how I really felt.
“This isn’t a difficult track this afternoon, what on earth is going on? Lately, I had a few enjoyable breaks that may have given me the impression that the game isn’t as difficult as I had thought.”
At the TPC San Antonio, Akshay Bhatia was three strokes ahead of Brendon Todd and Justin Lower after 18 holes.
The previously mentioned McIlroy shot a bogey-free 3-under 69 in his first round of a tournament after speaking with Butch Harmon, Tiger Woods’ former coach.
Rumors that McIlroy was speaking with the renowned swing coach earlier this week were verified.
In addition, he shared the amusing response his daughter Poppy gave him when he told her he was going away for a few days.
During McIlroy’s first round in Texas, there was also an incident where some golf fans said the Northern Irishman was playing the game fast and loosely.
Regarding Spieth, he argued that perseverance is essential.
“Fortunately, I’ve been in similar situations before where I probably would have been a lot more impatient,” he continued.
“I think I’m good at letting things come to me, but you know, you get a little impatient. It appears to be a poor hand of blackjack; you are unable to get up from the table, and perhaps the hole-in-one will make things better.
“Once more, I believe I’m being patient and optimistic; it’s just that I’d like to see a few more results from what feels like a much better year than it has thus far.”
