Joost Luiten responded quite well to Thomas Pieters’ assertion that the standards at LIV Golf are “ten times better” than those on the DP World Tour.
Joost Luiten responded with a playful jab about Official World Golf Ranking points to Thomas Pieters’ assertion that LIV Golf is “ten times better” than the DP World Tour in terms of standards.
After LIV Golf Jeddah over the weekend, Pieters told Gulf News that he thought the Saudi-funded league’s depth was far better than the DP World Tour, where he played frequently.
Here was Pieters’ exact quote:
“Going into the DP World Tour, the caliber of golf has improved tenfold from what I played previously.”
Before reportedly accepting a $10 million fee to join LIV Golf in 2023, Pieters won six times on the DP World Tour between 2015 and 2022.
The powerful Belgian teamed up with Bubba Watson’s RangeGoats GC, but since joining in February of last year, he has only managed one top-10 finish.
Pieters has attributed that to some personal problems as well as unfavorable local weather.
Even though Joost Luiten, a fellow six-time DP World Tour winner, thinks Pieters may be correct about the class gap, given that players like Jon Rahm will be competing on the LIV Golf League in 2024, the Dutchman could not help but troll his own little barb.
Following up on Pieters’ most recent remarks, Luiten told GolfMagic:
“Perhaps Thomas is correct; it would be strange if the DP World Tour had more power given the Saudis’ investment in LIV Golf. “It’s unfortunate that they lack points in the world ranking.”
According to a report published this week by SI, LIV Golf has formally abandoned their pursuit of OWGR accreditation.
It remains the only top-tier professional circuit in the world that does not receive world ranking points.
