LIV Golf may have made Patrick Reed very wealthy but it’s also led to his drop in the world rankings, prompting a dig from Eddie Pepperell aimed at the former Masters champion
Patrick Reed has been made fun of by Eddie Pepperell for dropping out of the top 100 rankings following his decision to sign with LIV Golf.
Reed won the Masters, was a multiple PGA Tour winner, and was once ranked No. 5 in the world. However, statistics account @VC606 predicts that Reed will finish outside the top 100 this week. Because the Official World Golf Ranking rejected their accreditation in October 2023, players in LIV Golf do not receive ranking points for their tournaments.
The past animosity between Pepperell and Reed has been rekindled following a sarcastic remark. Pepperell acknowledged that Reed is still a fantastic player, but he made a joke about maybe threatening legal action because of Reed’s new ranking. Regarding the news, Pepperell wrote on X, “Terrific player still.” “Hopefully, he won’t sue the OWGR.”
The remark alludes to Reed’s attempt to sue golf media members for $750 million in defamation. In addition to the case being dismissed, Reed was ordered to pay the publications’ and journalists’ legal fees.
When Pepperell learned about the lawsuit, he referred to Reed as a “f clown.” Pepperell has also criticized Reed in the past, particularly after he was charged with cheating at the Hero World Challenge in 2018.
How on earth were you thinking? Pepperell at the time wrote on X. In 2022, Reed joined LIV Golf as a number of players left the PGA Tour to play on the Saudi-sponsored circuit.
Since moving to LIV in June 2022, Reed has made over $18 million, which is a substantial sum of money regardless of his OWGR ranking. However, Reed maintains that he didn’t change careers for financial gain, saying as much in an Instagram caption: “One of my favorite aspects is the team aspect. In the same tournament, we have competition and camaraderie.
There’s a long list of wonderful things to adore! It’s even easier when you play Friday through Sunday. There are still a few this season if you haven’t gone, and I think sports fans will have a great time. IYKYK.
For sponsorship reasons, Pepperell changed his name from the European Tour, but he has remained faithful to the DP Tour. Despite trying to understand the concept after witnessing winning celebrations, he still finds the whole thing “cringe” after watching LIV Golf.
“To be honest, I just tried to watch this and experience something real. In response to a video of Bryson DeChambeau celebrating the 2023 LIV Golf Team Championship, Pepperell wrote on X, “Joy, inspiration, something.” And I merely winced. Everything about the show—the teams, the individuals—is just cringe-worthy. I hate to be negative, but to be really honest, it’s not very compelling.”
