Caleb Surratt, a rising star in LIV Golf, responds to his detractors after turning down the PGA Tour.
Caleb Surratt, the latest addition to Jon Rahm’s LIV Golf team, has responded to critics who have questioned his choice to forego a PGA Tour career.
Surratt, 19, entered the professional ranks to play for Legion XIII, the team led by Jon Rahm, who reportedly paid the league $600 million to join.
Along with Rahm are his European Ryder Cup partner Tyrrell Hatton and Kieran Vincent.
Speaking on the Fairway to Heaven podcast with LIV Golf, Surratt stated:
Going from college to playing with major champions like Phil Mickelson is in no way “shying away from competition,” as some have claimed. “I have truly learned that and embraced that, and it’s made me super confident in my decision,” the statement reads.
Surratt says he is certain that joining the LIV Golf League, which is supported by Saudi Arabia, was the right choice.
“After playing professionally for three weeks, I can state with certainty that I have improved in practically every area of my game. That will be something else entirely in a few years, I can only think.”
Surratt talked about how amazing it was for Nick Dunlap to win recently—he was the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour in thirty-three years—and how it inspired him to seize every opportunity he had in 2024.
“There are no guarantees in life,” stated Surratt, “so I was just incredibly fortunate and grateful for the chance.”
“Being a professional golfer is what we’ve all wanted to do, and at some point, golf becomes a job.
There is no denying that Surratt has some of the top players on LIV Golf surrounding him in 2024.
After all, the captain of Surratt is a two-time major champion and a former World No. 1 player.
Hatton has also won six times on the European Tour and one on the PGA Tour. He amusingly assisted Surratt in checking into a hotel in Las Vegas.
With a T-12 and T-13 in his first two events on LIV Golf, Surratt has shown excellent performance thus far. Earlier this month, at Mayakoba, he helped Legion XIII win team honors.
At the upcoming LIV Golf event, which takes place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from March 1-3, Surratt will be hoping to keep up his steady improvement in the game.
