Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have gone toe-to-toe on a number of occasions throughout their careers, but one column Mickelson is clear in is his hole-in-one tally
According to Phil Mickelson, he has made an astounding 47 hole-in-ones in his career—double the total of his fiercest rival, Tiger Woods.
Although Woods and Mickelson engaged in some of the greatest matches in golf history when they were at their best, it seems that “Lefty” has an advantage when it comes to making aces. In the aftermath of Mickelson’s decision to join LIV Golf, the two have parted ways.
Additionally, Phil Mickelson, the captain of the HyFlyers, participated in a Q&A session that was featured in the tournament media guide prior to this week’s breakaway league event in Las Vegas.
When asked how many times he had holed out from the tee box during the Q&A, the six-time major champion responded with an almost unbelievable 47. To put this into perspective, consider that Woods, who is regarded as golf’s all-time great, has made 20 putters in his career.
Naturally, not all 47 have participated in competitions; the number also includes practice and social golf. Nevertheless, especially when compared to other greats, Mickelson’s record is quite impressive. Although the HyFlyers captain hasn’t made an ace in the LIV setup yet, he did make five when he was on the PGA Tour.
And two of those have occurred at some of the most prestigious golf tournaments. When Mickelson was a young 25-year-old, he holed out at the Players Championship in 1995. Six years later, at Southern Hills, he repeated the feat on a grander scale at the U.S. Open.
The other three he achieved were at the 84 LUMBER Classic in 2005, the 1994 Kemper Open, and the 1995 Houston Open. The 53-year-old, who had a forgettable season opener in Mexico last weekend, will definitely be hoping for some similar magic in Vegas this week.
At LIV Mayakoba, Mickelson began his campaign with a second-bottom finish. He ended the week at 11 over par, only managing to surpass 4Aces star Harold Varner III. His HyFlyers team had a difficult week as well; they finished in 10th place with a combined score that was two over par for the week.
The 45-time PGA Tour winner has a long history, but he hasn’t crossed the finish line in the Saudi-sponsored series yet. In the inaugural season of League of Legends in 2022, Mickelson’s best finish came in Chicago, where he placed eighth, seven shots behind winner Cameron Smith.
