Jon Rahm makes Ryder Cup feelings clear after ‘risk’ admission as LIV Golf debut looms

LIV Golf will showcase Jon Rahm for the first time on February 2 as the season begins, but the Spaniard is concerned that his £450 million decision will ruin all Ryder Cup hopes

Tyrrell Hatton has been praised heavily by Jon Rahm ahead of his LIV Golf debut, despite both men being at risk of missing out on the next Ryder Cup.

Rahm acknowledged there was a significant “risk” involved in leaving the PGA Tour to play for LIV at the end of the previous season, having originally decided to stick with the PGA Tour. This was because European players on the Saudi-backed tour were not allowed to compete in the Ryder Cup. Just a few days prior to the start of the season on February 2, Hatton officially made the switch from the PGA Tour to LIV.

Rahm’s Legion XIII, the first expansion team since League of Legends’ founding in 2022, now has Hatton on its roster. The Masters Champion, who may have eliminated himself from contention, is thrilled to have the English golfer join his squad and demonstrated his passion for the Ryder Cup.

Rahm greeted Hatton to his team by saying, “Tyrrell is a fierce competitor, proven champion, and of course my Ryder Cup teammate.” Rahm is a vital member of Team Europe and one of the greatest golfers in the world, but the current regulations prevent him from competing when the tournament returns to the United States in 2025.

Though he is aware that he no longer has control over the decision, Rahm is adamant about playing for Europe. Rahm declared, “My position for the Ryder Cup remains the same.” “I’ve expressed numerous times how important it is to me, and I hope to be included in more editions.

To take that risk is significant. That’s not up to me at the moment, but if it were, I’d be able to play, so I really hope I can continue to play well and give them good reasons to keep me on the squad.”

Although the Spaniard insisted that he doesn’t play golf for money, Rahm acknowledged the risk he was taking when he accepted a record offer from LIV that was reportedly worth £450 million. Rory McIlroy, who has opposed LIV from the beginning, stated that the Ryder Cup needed to alter the eligibility requirements to make room for the Masters Champion, confirming the caliber of Rahm’s abilities.

“In 2025, Jon will be in Bethpage. Thus, there is no doubt that the European Tour will need to revise the eligibility requirements for the Ryder Cup as a result of this decision, as McIlroy stated to Sky Sports. “Jon Rahm should be on the next Ryder Cup team, in my opinion.”

Hatton will accompany Rahm if he is admitted, which will greatly relieve both of the golfers who are now representing Legion XIII. Caleb Surratt and Kieran Vincent are also members of the new expansion roster. Their match is scheduled for February 2 in Mexico.
