Max Verstappen renews hostilities with F1 rival at Las Vegas GP with “stupid idiot” blast

Max Verstappen has a habit of speaking his mind over the radio and things were no different when he and Alpine racer Esteban Ocon almost got in a tangle in Las Vegas

Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon took angry shots at one another after almost crashing in Las Vegas Grand Prix qualifying.

As is often the case on street circuits, there was plenty of traffic on track at the end of Q1. Ocon, clearly not interested in playing a part in that, overtook several other drivers waiting to start their final flying laps.

But Verstappen also chose that moment to put his foot down. The result was that both of them reached the first corner at the same time, leading to them racing for track position and almost colliding.

The Red Bull shot up the inside of the Alpine, nearly causing Verstappen to lose control. Verstappen was able to simply abort, secure in the knowledge that he had advanced to the next section of the session, while Ocon quickly continued the lap.

But that didn’t mean he wasn’t concerned about what had happened. He yelled over the radio, “What a stupid idiot!” Ocon, meanwhile, had a grievance of his own that he wanted addressed.

Really, that’s a joke. Verstappen lunging headlong into Turn 1!” With evident conviction that the Dutchman was at fault, he yelled. The fact that he was only 17th fastest on the first run and did not finish Q1 will have added to his frustration.

Those two drivers have been at odds with one another for a very long time. Following an on-track collision during the race, they got into a physical altercation in the paddock of the 2018 Brazilian Grand Prix.

As anticipated, Verstappen advanced to qualifying round three but was unable to mount a credible challenge for pole position. Despite being defeated by both Ferraris, he had to settle for P3 on the track. However, when Carlos Sainz’s grid penalty is taken into consideration, he will start the race alongside pole-sitter Charles Leclerc.

After a solid session, George Russell takes third place, but his teammate’s results weren’t as good. Lewis Hamilton was forced to start 10th on the grid when Sainz passes him in qualifying, having finished 11th fastest on the road.

Williams, who demonstrated an exceptional top speed on this street track’s lengthy straightaways, stole the show in the qualifying round. Both drivers finished in the top 10, and Alex Albon’s fastest qualifying time allowed him to lock down the fifth grid position. His rookie teammate Logan Sargeant, who had the best qualifying session of his Formula One career, will start third.
