Rory McIlroy responds to claims Ryder Cup teammate could jump ship to LIV Golf

Following his announcement last week that he would not be participating in the TGL golf league, which is coached by Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, there was conjecture that Jon Rahm might sign with LIV Golf.

Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy’s Ryder Cup teammate, is not expected to join LIV Golf anytime soon.

In early October, Team Europe defeated Team USA 16.5-11.5 to win the Ryder Cup in Italy, with the assistance of McIlroy and Rahm. In addition, the two were supposed to be teammates in McIlroy’s upcoming new golf league, which is scheduled to begin play in the coming months.

Tiger Woods, the 15-time major champion, and McIlroy are in charge of TGL, a “tech-infused” golf league. The new league will begin play on June 9 of the following year, with 24 players divided into six teams (four players on each team).

But last week, it was revealed that Rahm would not be appearing in the TGL premiere season. While a number of players chose to leave the PGA Tour and join LIV Golf, Rahm is one of the players who has stayed on the circuit.

Rahm’s choice to skip TGL has raised rumors that the Spaniard might play for LIV Golf instead. McIlroy, who has also stayed faithful to the PGA Tour, discussed the speculation regarding Rahm’s potential career path.

McIkoy disclosed that he recently spoke with Rahm, discussing the impression he received from his Ryder Cup partner regarding the prospect of joining LIV.

During a press conference, McIlroy told reporters, “I spoke to Jon a couple days ago and would be very, very surprised if that were to happen,” according to Bunkered. “I have a good feeling that Jon plays on the PGA Tour.”

On November 2, Rahm made a public announcement on Twitter (formerly known as X) announcing his decision to leave TGL. The Spaniard, who now lives in Arizona, gave his departure as a result of his inability to commit to the league.

“I am sad to confirm that I will not be participating in the first TGL season,” wrote Rahm on Twitter. “While I still think it’s a great opportunity, right now it would require a level of commitment that I can’t offer. Best of luck to everyone involved and may the best team win!”

TGL will be played indoors at the custom-built SoFi Center at Palm Beach Gardens in Florida. The first season begins in June and will run over the course of 15 weeks in head-to-head ‘Modern Match Play’ clashes.

McIlroy will be part of the Boston Common team, which will also feature Keagan Bradley, Adam Scott, and Tyrrell Hatton. The other teams in the league include Atlanta Drive, New York, San Francisco and LAGC, with other star names including Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffelle, Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood.
