Wearing an outfit inspired by Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton arrived at the Interlagos circuit for this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix.
As he arrived for the Brazilian Grand Prix’s media day on Thursday, Lewis Hamilton made it clear to everyone which hometown hero he is honoring this weekend. He turned heads all over the paddock.
Hamilton, who has a deep affection for Ayrton Senna that dates back to his early years, honored the late Sao Paolo hero by showing up in a custom suit with fluorescent green and yellow accents and a picture of the three-time F1 World Champion pinned to his back.
Lewis Hamilton’s special connection with Brazil
After a thrilling race against Max Verstappen to win the dramatic 2021 race, Hamilton wrapped himself in the Brazilian flag on the podium and was named an honorary citizen of Brazil last year.
Hamilton has spoken highly of the nation he feels a strong connection to, having formed a close bond with the Senna family while matching and surpassing Ayrton’s records. Ayrton died in a tragic accident while leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
“Brazil has always been a place that I’ve loved and admired as a kid,” he said.
“Obviously, being a fan of Ayrton Senna draws you to the nation naturally, but throughout my life, I’ve met more and more resilient Brazilians and learned more about their culture and community, which is incredibly diverse.
“There is a lot of vibrancy, music, and color, and I’ve had some incredible experiences there over the years. Brazil is where I have the largest fan base, having hosted my first World Championship there fourteen years ago. Add to that the incredible race I had there last year and the photo op with the Brazilian flag.
“So I’m very, very honoured and grateful and can’t wait to spend more time there.”
Hamilton has a “deep and strongly emotional” relationship with Brazil, according to a report from Republican congressman Jhonatan de Jesus, who also said the tribute was well-deserved.
“His actions enhance his undeniable athletic ability. Jesus continued, “It is also important to remember and emphasize his public statements in favor of pertinent causes like the environment, animal rights, Black people, women, and human rights.
