Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s new league, TGL, removed Jon Rahm from its website on Wednesday. Since then, innovative circuit has confirmed Rahm’s departure to Mirror Sport.
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s brand-new, cutting-edge golf league, TGL, has lost Jon Rahm. Following Rahm’s removal from the circuit’s website on Wednesday, rumors about his possible involvement with the league intensified.
TGL has subsequently confirmed Rahm’s departure in a statement that Mirror Sport was able to obtain. The statement said, “We will miss Jon during the inaugural TGL season. He is one of the most talented players in the game.”
“We accept Jon’s decision and wish him well. We recognize that athletes must juggle many different aspects of their personal and professional lives. TGL will shortly announce a new player to complete the 24-player roster.” One of the most well-known figures to join the setup last year was Rahm.
Though it has been confirmed that the Spaniard will not participate in the league headed by two players he is familiar with, Woods and McIlroy, there are still just two months until the official launch. Days have passed since TGL executives officially announced the format and regulations for the show’s inaugural season.
Over the course of 15 weeks, head-to-head matches will be held at the cutting-edge SoFi Center at Palm Beach Gardens, where 24 players from six different teams will compete. Players have begun to be assigned to teams this week; On Tuesday, Atalanta Drive GC announced the addition of Justin Thomas.
It was then confirmed a day later that Collin Morikawa, the winner of the ZOZO Championship, would be a player for Los Angeles Golf Club during the league’s inaugural season. Rahm has not yet been assigned to a team, and his spot on the roster will be filled “shortly.”
The loss of Rahm, the Spaniard and TGL’s second-highest ranked player in the world behind founder and world No. 2 McIlroy, is significant for the cutting-edge league. The Masters winner had backed the TGL setup as recently as August, when it was announced that it would employ Full Swing technology at its events.
He tweeted: “Vamos! As a personal user of @fullswinggolf’s simulators, I’m excited Full Swing will fuel @TGL’s technology next year.” The excitement mirrored his initial joining statement nine months earlier, after admitting he was ‘all in’ after hearing about Woods and McIlroy’s idea.
“I’m excited to join @TigerWoods, @McIlroyRory, and @JustinThomas34 in @TGL,” he said on social media last November. “As soon as I learned about the league, I was in! It will be great being a part of something that combines my interest in tech with the opportunity to introduce golf to a broader global audience.”
Woods and McIlroy will now be on the hunt for a replacement ahead of their campaign kick-off in January. A whole host of big-name players are yet to sign with TGL, with Scottie Scheffler Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland all opting to not to join Palm Beach Gardens-based setup.
