Red Bull ‘hatch Sergio Perez contract plan’ as stars align for Lando Norris switch

When Lando Norris’s contract with McLaren expires in 2025, it has been suggested that he will switch to Red Bull.

At the end of the season, Red Bull is rumored to be in talks with Sergio Perez about extending their contract. Despite the Mexican’s unpredictable past, the move would match his contract duration with that of Lando Norris, who has been heavily tipped to partner Max Verstappen in later stages of his career.

Perez’s argument for staying at Red Bull is definitely being aided by the absence of strong alternatives. The 33-year-old’scontractis set to expire at the end of the following campaign, but there have been rumors that if he doesn’t finish in second place in the Drivers’ Championship, his job could be in danger.

Therefore, it would be unexpected if Red Bull decided to keep Perez under contract longer than what he is currently under. Talks between the six-time Grand Prix winner and his team, according to Total-Motorsport.com, are planned for December.

It is said that an extension keeping Perez in place until the end of the 2025 season will be a major discussion point.

His renegotiated contract would expire on the same date as Norris’s if he signs on the dotted line. Red Bull might be reluctant to bench Perez in 2024 in favor of a temporary replacement for the entire season until the McLaren star becomes available.

In the event that Norris is Christian Horner’s preferred candidate, then extending the Mexican’s consent would make sense. The Red Bull team has already acknowledged that the 23-year-old is a highly esteemed Formula One star.

“Lando’s a great driver – he’s a big talent, big personality and of course he’s one of those drivers that you keep an eye on,” he told Sky Sports. “Being Max’s team-mate is never going to be easy and some drivers may be up for that challenge, some may not be.

“But of course as well as the drivers we have in-house, we keep an eye on all the driver market. As you can imagine, there’s quite a bit of interest from certain sectors about driving a Red Bull car.”

In contrast, Perez expressed consideration for a future beyond Red Bull while talking about the pressure he had to deal with earlier in the season. After the year we’ve had, he said, “I think it’s important to be in an environment where I feel like I can contribute in the next races.”

We must find other options if that location in the future isn’t here. My main goal right now is to remain here and win more races. And continue to win titles with Red Bull.”
