After a protracted absence from the field, McNealy of the PGA Tour returns.
After five months off due to injury, PGA Tour pro Maverick McNealy is back on the circuit this week at the World Wide Technology Championship.
For the first time since missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open in June, McNealy, 27, will play on the PGA Tour.
The El Cardonal at Diamante, designed by Tiger Woods, is the venue for this week’s competition.
After rupturing the anterior sterno-clavicular ligament in his left shoulder in February of last year, McNealy battled through the discomfort for a few months before deciding to give it up.
The American decided to undergo “physical therapy, biomechanics analysis, golf swing modifications, and regenerative stem-cell treatments” as part of his treatment regimen.
During his vacation, McNealy also got engaged and worked toward earning his instrument rating as a private pilot.
As a result of his lengthy spell on the sidelines, McNealy, who has never won on the PGA Tour, is still on the way to retain his card for next season at 121st in the FedEx Cup Fall Points List with just three events remaining on the schedule – but only just.
The top 125 on the FedEx Cup Fall Points List retain their cards and are exempt into all full-field events in 2024.
It is understood McNealy plans to play in at least two of the next three tournaments, but much will depend on his position on the list.
McNealy has slipped from 99th in the world to 154th since taking time out the game.
The WWT Championship features a number of PGA Tour stars such as Ludvig Aberg, Cameron Young and Sahith Theegala.
PGA pro Michael Block has also received an invite into the tournament.
