Lewis Hamilton beams after Mexico Grand Prix as George Russell left frustrated

Lewis Hamilton emerged from sixth on the starting grid to a comfortable second place at the finish, trailing only race winner Max Verstappen, having escaped the chaos of the Mexican Grand Prix.

Following the Mexican Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton expressed his excitement for the race in Brazil.

The seven-time world champion had another somewhat disappointing qualifying session and lined up sixth. After the race, team principal Toto Wolff made it plain that he wants to see his drivers get better in that area.

However, Hamilton won the race itself. He stayed out of the chaos that brought home hero Sergio Perez’s death at the first corner and continued to accelerate quickly to take second place, ahead of the two Ferraris that had started on the front row and only behind winner Max Verstappen.

And when he addressed reporters later, it was clear that he was delighted. “Considering that we began from P6, this is a fantastic outcome. The team had a fantastic day. We worked really hard, and I’m proud of the entire group for their efforts,” the British person smiled.

It’s wonderful to finally recover because the past few weeks have been challenging for us. Today the car felt lot better, and the speed was high. We did a good job of controlling the tyres and maintaining the car’s balance today.

We worked really hard over the weekend to perfect the setup, and today’s outcome demonstrates the effort that each member of the team put forth to make that happen. I’m eager to travel to Brazil and hopefully maintain the fast speed of the vehicle.”

Team-mate George Russell also made progress overall, finishing sixth after starting two places further back. But he was more frustrated with that result having suffered a brakes issue which limited his chances and, in the end, left him feeling slightly relieved that he was able to fend off the challenge of Daniel Ricciardo in the final laps.

“I felt really good in the car today, the pace was there so definitely a positive from this weekend,” he said. “I was right behind Carlos [Sainz] wanting to overtake when my brakes overheated.

“We were concerned about making it to the end, so I had to back off and that’s where I lost all the temperature in the tyres and didn’t manage to get them back into the right window. It was like driving on ice for the last 20 laps so I’m glad I managed to finish in P6.

“We had another challenging weekend, but the car was running smoothly. All we need to do is show consistency and have a few clean weekends, and I have no doubt that we can accomplish that. Anticipating Brazil, I hope to exhibit strong speed there as well, and ideally we’ll be able to compete for the podium.”
