Kelly Piquet, the girlfriend of Max Verstappen, has spoken out about the abuse and threats to her life that she has encountered on social media.
Kelly Piquet, the girlfriend of Max Verstappen and the daughter of three-time Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet, has taken to social media to express her emotions after acknowledging that she has been subjected to abuse and threats of death for her remarks regarding the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Piquet has been vociferous in her calls for a cease-fire and peace on Instagram.
Piquet released a lengthy statement on her Instagram story as she explained her activism online, while urging her followers who disagree with her to take their attention elsewhere as the model and motorsport columnist revealed that she had received “highly abusive language” and death threats.
The pain, suffering, mourning, trauma, shock, and despair that the Palestinian people in Gaza are currently experiencing is something that never ceases to bother her, she wrote. To think of all the young, defenseless lives that have been lost, the destroyed families, the children who have no parents, and the parents who have had to give their dead children a final embrace.
“I’m grateful that four of the hostages held by Hamas have been freed safely. I’m also thinking about the hostages that they still hold.” However, it is incomprehensible what I am seeing on a daily basis in terms of photos and videos of the horror in Gaza.
“Instead of coming in my DMs with your death threats, highly abusive language, and other obscene pictures, UNFOLLOW ME. This is not a ~conflict~ this is a genocide. My follower count or brand deals are not more important than a life I could be saving by advocating to stop this. And neither are yours.”
Piquet had been in attendance at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday to watch her boyfriend Verstappen recover from a sixth-placed start to win in Austin, Texas. The Red Bull man was also on the receiving end of some backlash as supporters decided to boo him as he took to the podium to celebrate his victory.
Piquet appeared perplexed at the boos while the name of Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez was also chanted, though the US GP winner did not seem fazed by the reaction. He told ViaPlay: “No, no. In the end, I’m the one who takes the silverware home, so all fine by me!”
Aside from the song, though, Piquet persisted in spreading her message of peace by advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza in spite of the death threats and negative comments she has received online.
“Express that you want this ethnic cleansing to end,” she continued. ASAP. Only humans are capable of living in liberty and harmony. It’s only human to want an end to hostilities. To ask for the safety of every child is only human. I support world peace. I represent love. I support liberty.
