Lewis Hamilton left smiling as Mercedes make “global improvement” ahead of Austin GP

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will benefit from the latest major upgrade for team of the season at the United States Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton hopes new upgrades to his Mercedes will “pull the weight” and help him challenge for the lead on the Formula 1 circuit again.

Amid the Silver Arrows’ struggles, Hamilton endured the longest winning drought of his career. It’s been almost two years since the seven-time world champion’s last victory, the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

And Mercedes has won just once in total in that time, when team-mate George Russell took charge for Hamilton to win in Brazil last year. And although the team has made progress in developing its car, the W14 is still far behind the Red Bulls
A new facelift for this weekend’s United States Grand Prix – Mercedes’ latest major development during the season – certainly won’t suddenly be pushed back from competing for regular race wins. But Hamilton hopes it can keep his team motivated going into the final five rounds of the year and also make a difference to his plans for 2024.

‘It’s been a lot of work giant at the factory’, he declared. “This is our last big update or the biggest of the big updates of the season and I’m really excited to see how it goes. All the great people at The factory has been working extremely hard throughout the season and hopefully this really tips the scales a little bit and keeps us on track towards what we want to pursue next year.

“I don’t knowing exactly all the different parts of the circuit that I would feel. But, hopefully, it’s a global improvement and hopefully puts us a little bit closer to the guys ahead.”

Team principal Toto Wolff specified that the floor of the W14 has been revamped and also spoke of the impact it will hopefully have on the team’s next challenger. “We have a busy couple of weeks coming up as the season heads towards its conclusion, starting with a triple-header in the USA, Mexico and Brazil,” said the Austrian.

“COTA is one of the most challenging modern tracks and a real thrill for the drivers. We’ll be bringing a modified floor, which is the last significant update we will take to the track this year. It will hopefully bring a small gain but more importantly, is another milestone in setting our development path for the W15.

“The battle for second place between the manufacturers has become fiercer in recent races. We will keep our heads down, continue to attack and aim to score as many points as possible to join increase your advantage.”
