Ivor Robson, voice of The Open, passes away; The golf world pays tribute

Ivor Robson, the voice of the Open Championship for nearly half a century, has passed away.He was 83 years old.

Robson began his career as the first ring announcer at The Open in 1975 at Carnoustie. For 41 years, he was a regular on the first tee, never missed a championship or tee time and avoided
going to the bathroom.

His distinctive Scottish accent has led thousands of rounds at the Open and DP World Tour with his signature “On the tee…” introduction.

“We are extremely saddened to hear of Ivor’s passing. His voice is instantly recognizable and is synonymous with the championship for players and millions of golf fans around the world,” said Martin Slumbers, CEO of the R&A.

“He is very well known and respected among all the golfers who have competed at the Open and I know they will share our sadness at this news.”

Robson announced his retirement in 2015 and played that year’s Open final at St. Andrews. He competed in his final event in November at the European Tour Finals in Dubai.
