Lewis Hamilton’s record that Oscar Piastri is likely to break in the final races of 2023

It is increasingly likely that Oscar Piastri will break Lewis Hamilton’s long-standing record from 2007.

Hamilton currently holds the record for most points scored in a rookie season – 109 – in 2007.

Piastri now has 83 points with 5 days remaining.

Thus, in the next 5 races (and 2 sprint events), Piastri will only need to score 27 points to break Hamilton’s record.

With 109 points, Hamilton missed out on the 2007 title by just one point ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. Since then, no rookie has been able to match it, with Alex Albon scoring 92 points in 2019.

Certainly, with more races (including sprint events) and a revised scoring system, Hamilton’s record was always likely to be broken at some point.

If Hamilton’s 2007 points total were converted to the modern scoring system, he would score 267 points (265 + 2 for fastest lap).

Given McLaren’s form in recent rounds, Piastri should have no problem beating her.
